Get Ready for Fright Night: Prep & Protect Your Skin This Halloween

Halloween scares are just around the corner and that means preparing your skin for the toll that heavy costume makeup can take on your skin. Prepping your skin for new makeup looks this month – whether they be trends or costume dress up – is critical. Everybody loves getting creative with Halloween makeup, but its typically thick, waxy, and sometimes greasy texture can do a number on your complexion.

Make sure you review this quick guide to the before and after to maintain your skin’s delicate barrier while you nail your amazing Halloween look this month.

Before Applying Makeup:

1. Cleanse. Start with a clean canvas to remove any surface skin debris and excess oil. A light exfoliating cleanser will help remove dead skin cells and impurities. Keeping the skin surface clean is important to help reduce inflammation, clogged pores, and irritation.

2. Apply a hydrating toner. This will help remove any traces of cleanser and prep the skin’s surface pH for the next step. If you are blemish prone or oily, try our gentle Aloe Salicylic Toner. Hydrating Marine Toner is an excellent prep for all skin types. Or mist a spritz of Citrus Freshener onto the skin for a quick skin refresher.

3. Moisturize. Don’t go channeling your inner makeup artist without hydrating first for protection from the effects of heavy makeup. If your skin is dry, opt for our Advanced Moisture or Super Emollient Crème. If you favor a lighter formulation, try Marine Hydration Crème.

After Makeup:

After your spooktacular evening, you’ll probably want to hit the pillow right away but you know better! You’ll need to double cleanse with a lotion, creamy cleanser, or balm followed by a lighter exfoliating cleanser to remove all traces of makeup and surface debris. Our super gentle Eye Makeup Remover is the perfect antidote for the delicate eye area.

Use a toner again for prepping the skin for other products and to help balance the skin’s natural pH levels.

We recommend a serum for evening skin repair while you sleep. A pump or two of Hyaluronic Acid (a must do for all skin types!) followed by an appropriate serum. For dry or dehydrated, Marine Silk Serum or Renewal Serum is a good choice. Hydro Collagen Serum is great for all skin types, while Multi-Fruit Hydration Gel is a lightweight, non-greasy alternative for oily or blemish prone skins.

Last but not least, apply your nighttime moisturizer. Hydrate, hydrate – we can’t say it enough! You want to soothe, replenish, and balance your skin. For further repair and protection, try Vitamin A Crème (plant based, gentle retinol alternative) or Vitamin C Crème (packed with antioxidants).
